LAVENDER
Lavender flowers symbolise peace, calm and healing

Sentosa_Festive_Market_Valentine_edition_6_copy

Planting Depth: Plant the seed about 1–2 cm deep.
Soil: Prefers well-draining soil like sandy or loamy soil.
Watering: Water only when the top of the soil is dry. Be careful not to overwater as it can cause root rot, especially in small pods without drainage.

Sunlight: Lavender needs 4–6 hours of indirect sunlight a day. Avoid the harsh midday sun to prevent leaf burn.
Temperature: Thrives best in 20–30°C (68–86°F), but Singapore's humidity can be challenging. Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent mold or mildew.
Sprouting Time: Expect 7–21 days for the seeds to sprout.
Darkness: Lavender seeds don’t need to be in the dark before being exposed to light.
Additional Tips: Lavender can tolerate Singapore’s warmth, but keep it in a well-ventilated spot and avoid overly humid.
Repotting: When the plant grows bigger, transfer to a larger pot with drainage.

COSMOS
Cosmos represents harmony, peace and love

Planting Depth: Plant the seed about 0.5–1 cm deep.
Soil: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil.
Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist, ensuring good drainage. Water only when the top feels dry.
Sunlight: Cosmos need 5–6 hours of sunlight but can tolerate some afternoon shade.
Temperature: Cosmos enjoy warmth and humidity, perfect for Singapore’s tropical heat, and are best at 24–30°C. Be mindful of high winds or heavy rain which might damage the stems.
Sprouting Time: Seeds will sprout in about 7–14 days.
Darkness: No need to keep the seeds in the dark. Light helps trigger germination.
Additional Tips: Cosmos are very easy to grow, but be careful of aphids and other pests. You can try using neem oil or a mild soap solution if pests become a problem.

Repotting: Once the plant starts outgrowing the pod, transfer to a bigger pot with drainage.

Planting Depth: Plant seeds about 2–3 cm deep.
Soil: Prefers rich, well-draining soil that’s slightly acidic to neutral.
Watering: Sunflowers need a lot of water but make sure the soil has proper drainage. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially when sprouting.
Sunlight: Sunflowers need 6+ hours of direct sunlight each day. Place them in a sunny spot.
Temperature: Ideal for 25–35°C (77–95°F), perfect for Singapore’s climate.
Sprouting Time: Seeds will sprout in 7–10 days.
Darkness: Seeds don’t need to be kept in the dark before being exposed to the sun.
Additional Tips: Dwarf Sunflowers although smaller than regular sunflower grow up to 60-90cm. Ensure they have enough space and support if necessary.
Repotting: Transfer to a larger pot when the seedling starts growing tall and outgrows the pod.

AFRICAN MARIGOLDS
African Marigolds symbolize positivity, creativity and warmth.

Planting Depth: Plant seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep.
Soil: Prefers well-draining soil, and marigolds thrive in slightly acidic to neutral soil.
Watering: Water the plant regularly, but ensure the water drains well. Avoid waterlogging.
Sunlight: Marigolds love full 6 hours of direct sunlight.
Temperature: Marigolds thrive at 25–30°C (77–86°F), ideal for Singapore.
Sprouting Time: Seeds will sprout in 7–14 days.
Darkness: Marigold seeds can be placed directly under light.
Additional Tips: Marigolds are known for repelling pests, so they’re great to plant alongside other plants.
Repotting: Once the plant becomes root-bound, move it to a larger pot with drainage.

Darkness: Snapdragons can germinate with exposure to light, no need to keep them in darkness.
Additional Tips: Snapdragons grow in tall spires, and their colourful blooms can last well into the cooler months.

Repotting: Once your plant outgrows the pod, transfer it to a larger pot with proper drainage.

KEY ADJUSTMENTS FOR

SINGAPORE'S TROPICAL ENVIRONMENT

Encouraging Germination
After planting the seeds, you can cover the pods with a clear plastic cover or plastic wrap to maintain humidity. Once the seeds have sprouted, remove the cover to prevent mould.

Humidity & Air Circulation
Singapore’s high humidity can affect the growth of some flowers, especially those that like drier conditions like lavender. It’s essential to ensure good airflow around the plants. Consider placing the pots in a slightly breezy area or even under a fan, to help the plants avoid fungal diseases.

Watering Caution:
Tropical environments mean temperature is higher and humidity can vary. Check the soil frequently and water the plants only when the top of the soil feels dry (around 1–2 cm deep). It’s also essential to prevent water from collecting at the bottom of the pods.

Soil Drainage:
Since your coffee pods don’t have drainage holes, consider adding a layer of small stones or gravel to the bottom of the pod to help with excess moisture. This can help prevent waterlogging around the plant's roots.

Positioning & Shade
Opt for bright, indirect light for delicate plants like lavender. For flowers like cosmos and elephant calendula, consider providing shade during the peak afternoon sun. Use a small fabric shade cover or place them under larger plants or structures that can provide some relief from the intense midday heat.
Sunflowers and marigolds thrive in full direct sunlight.
